Visiting Artists

Each year the Office for the Arts invites artists to interact with undergraduates and the Harvard community in a range of activities, from workshops and lectures to projects requiring a multi-day residency. These artists participate under the aegis of Learning From Performers, The Jazz Program, Public Art Program, Dance Program, and Ceramics Program.

Learning From Performers

Learning From Performers gives students rich opportunities to meet and work with leading professional artists. Past guests have included vocalist Bobby McFerrin, actors Whoopi Goldberg, Mandy Patinkin, and Mel Gibson, conductor James Levine, choreographer Mark Morris, composer/vocalist Randy Newman, musician/ composer/producer Quincy Jones, and playwrights Wendy Wasserstein, Paula Vogel, and Tony Kushner. Each year, Learning From Performers designates one artist each as the Peter Ivers Visiting Artist; the Kayden Artist in Residence in music and musical theater; the Marshall S. Cogan Visiting Artist in the visual arts; the Ruth Page Visiting Artist in dance; and the Clifton Visiting Artist, a young woman artist. Students may sign up for master classes and workshops presented by these artists, and are invited to participate, sometimes with the general public, in seminars, lecture-demonstrations, and discussions. Participation is limited in some LFP events, open in others. Interested students should watch for posters on campus and announcements in the Arts Spectrum, Gazette, Crimson, Independent, and local publications.
