For his dissertation he is writing about patients' self-awareness and the diagnosis of anosognosia in "Blind to their Blindness:  Indifference, Anosognosia, and the Denial of Illness, 1880-1960." Other interests include the placebo effect and religion in contemporary medicine, neuroethics and the therapeutic misconception, the medical anthropology of trance, and neurological themes in literature and film.
