"My true takeaway from this experience and what I will never forget is the time spent with my students. I designed my lessons around the theme of shaping
hopes and dreams for the future. I felt that so many of the students had not really thought about their future and what they wanted it to look like. I tried to
expose my students to all the opportunities that existed both in their community and outside, whether in the United States or in China. I spoke to them about the
value of education in effecting change to help their loved ones and community." - 2012 Participant
"During my stay in China... I learned about the strengths that China possesses and the difficulties that China faces due to the unique circumstances of the
country. I experienced a different side of China that is not usually shown in the media. I was able to see some of the natural beauties that China has to offer
and at the same time some of the hardships that the Chinese people face in their everyday lives.
What I remember the most during my trip to China was a conversation I had with one of my fellow teammates. He said that although he was able to interact with
many of the students... when he went back to Hong Kong, he quickly forgot them... In order to prevent that from happening again this year, we found a way to
stay connected by creat[ing] QQ accounts (a Chinese messenger service) and invited the students to add us. Since I left China, I have kept writing to some of
the students I met and I wish to keep doing this for as long as I can. I am really grateful that I was able to participate in this program and I can only hope
that the students I taught learned from me as much as I learned from them."
