William C. Kirby, Chairman
William C. Kirby is T. M. Chang Professor of China Studies at Harvard University and Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration at the Harvard Business School. He is a Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor. He serves as Director of the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies and Chairman of the Harvard China Fund.
A historian of modern China, Professor Kirby’s work examines China's business, economic, and political development in an international context. He has written on the evolution of modern Chinese business (state-owned and private); Chinese corporate law and company structure; the history of freedom in China; the international socialist economy of the 1950s; relations across the Taiwan Strait; and China’s relations with Europe and America. His current projects include case studies of contemporary Chinese businesses and a comparative study of higher education in China and the United States.
Before coming to Harvard in 1992, he was Professor of History, Director of Asian Studies, and Dean of University College at Washington University in St. Louis. At Harvard, he has served as Chair of the History Department, Director of the Asia Center, and most recently, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. As Dean, he led Harvard's largest school, with 10,000 students, 1,000 faculty members, 2,500 staff, and an annual budget of $1 billion.
As Dean he initiated major reforms in undergraduate education in Harvard College; enhanced Harvard's international studies at home and abroad; increased substantially financial aid in the College and in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences; supported the growth of the Division (now School) of Engineering and Applied Sciences; and oversaw the construction of major new buildings in the Life Sciences, Engineering, and the Arts. During his tenure the Faculty expanded at its most rapid rate since the 1960s.
Professor Kirby holds degrees from Dartmouth College, Harvard University, and (Dr. Phil. Honoris Causa) from the Free University of Berlin and the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is Honorary Professor at Fudan University, Chongqing University, Peking University, Nanjing University, and the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences. He has held appointments also as Visiting Professor at the University of Heidelberg and the Free University of Berlin. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Maggie Zong, Associate Director of Harvard China Fund
Maggie Zong is Associate Director of the Harvard China Fund, reporting to the Chairman of the Harvard China Fund (HCF) and the Executive Director of the Harvard Center Shanghai. As chief administrator, she is responsible for the organization and day-to-day management of all HCF activities. Representing HCF to internal and external constituencies, she helps develop strategic priorities for HCF; cultivates interest among Harvard faculty, administrators and students for activities in China; and oversees programmatic activities at HCF, including the student internship and service programs, and the faculty grant program.
Before joining the Harvard China Fund, Maggie served as Assistant Director of Global Markets, Executive Education at Harvard Business School, where she managed the Senior Executive Program for China, the Global CEO Program for China, and the Global Colloquium on Participant-centered Learning. Prior to HBS, Maggie spent five years at Brown University as Assistant Director in the Office of International Student and Scholar Services. She also worked as Assistant to the Dean at Harvard University Graduate School of Design, helping launch the first executive education program for Chinese planners. In addition to her 20 years’ experience working for academic institutions, Maggie had a business career working for Chinese, American, and Hong Kong companies in China, including CNOOC, CAAC, and Occidental Petroleum Company.
Maggie appreciates arts, music and culinary arts. In her free time, she cooks for her friends and practices Chinese calligraphy. Maggie is willing to entertain proposals to give Chinese cooking lessons.

Julia Cai, Program Coordinator
Julia Cai is the Program Coordinator for the Harvard China Fund, helping to manage student programs (internships and service work), as well as assisting the Chairman and Associate Director with travel, expenses, and other special projects as needed. She graduated from Harvard College in 2006 with an A.B. in English and American Language and Literature, and significant coursework in Sociology. She spent a year in China teaching English at schools for children of migrant workers and organizing activities at a community center for the Zigen Fund, a poverty relief NGO. Before coming to the Harvard China Fund, Julia worked at the Crimson Summer Academy at Harvard, a program that helps economically disadvantaged high school students from Boston and Cambridge prepare for success in college and beyond.
Julia received her master's degree in nonprofit management from the Extension School in 2011 and a citation in ecological management in June 2012.
She was the 2011-2012 president of the Harvard Extension Environmental Club, a diverse student group that works to promote and organize around environmental issues.
In her spare time, Julia likes to sing, dance, give tours of Boston (with Boston by Foot), volunteer for social justice and environmental causes, and hunt for bargains.

Jeffrey R. Williams, Executive Director, Harvard Center Shanghai
Jeffrey R. Williams became the inaugural Executive Director at the Harvard Center Shanghai in November 2010.
As Executive Director, Williams is responsible for the Harvard Center Shanghai and its staff in support of Harvard’s wide range of activities in China. These include student programs, faculty research, case writing, executive education programs offered in partnership with Chinese institutions, and conferences. He works closely with Harvard Business School’s research center in Hong Kong while also building relationships with key academic, business, and government leaders in Greater China. He serves as the Center’s chief public representative by providing information about Harvard and the Center’s work to organizations in China and throughout the world.
Williams has spent most of his career in East Asia. As president of the Shenzhen Development Bank, he was the first foreigner to lead a Chinese bank since the founding of the PRC. Previously, he worked in Taiwan and Hong Kong for Citibank and as the Taiwan general manager for American Express Company and Standard Chartered Bank. Fluent in Mandarin, Williams was one of the first Americans to teach at Peking University after the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and the United States.
In China, Williams serves as an independent director or advisor to a number of companies. Having a long commitment to public service, he formerly served as chairman of the American Chamber of Commerce in Taipei, chairman of Taipei American School, and is currently a trustee of the China Medical Board.
Williams graduated magna cum laude in East Asian Languages and Civilizations from Harvard College in 1978 and received his MBA from Harvard Business School in 1982. In 2003 and 2009, he was a Senior Fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. An active alumnus, Williams has formerly been president of the Harvard Club of Hong Kong and president of the Harvard Club of Taiwan.

Lillian Wei, Director, Programs and Administration
Lillian Wei joined the Harvard China Fund in 2008 as the Director of Programs and Administration. She is responsible for the Harvard China Fund (HCF)’s China operations, program deliveries and administrative management.
Ms. Wei opened the Harvard Shanghai Office in 2008, and helped establish the Harvard Center Shanghai in 2010. She has been carrying out the University’s China initiatives, developing and managing joint student programs with Chinese universities and institutions, maintaining and expanding Harvard’s collaborations with Chinese authorities and enterprises, managing university-wide programs housed in the Harvard Center Shanghai, and supporting faculty members and University officials on their China missions.
Ms. Wei was the key manager in launching the Harvard China Student Internship Program. Since its initial success, she has overseen the planning, recruitment, and execution of the internship program, which rapidly became one of the largest internship programs at Harvard. She has also been the key manager of the Harvard China Winter Service Program, which sends students from various Harvard graduate schools to China on volunteering missions.
A seasoned professional from the business world, Ms. Wei brings to Harvard China Fund and Harvard Center Shanghai strong skills in project management and risk control, rich experience in consulting and customer service, and a deep understanding of both Western and Eastern cultures. Before her current assignment, she spent over a decade working for well-known multinational companies in the US and China, including Wyeth Pharmaceuticals (now part of Pfizer), Biogen-IDEC, Bose Corporation, and Wang Labs, in roles ranging from principal consultant to program director.
Ms. Wei has an MBA from the University of Massachusetts, and she also holds a Bachelor’s degree from East China University of Science and Technology.

Anna Li, Program Manager, Student Programs Support and Development
Anna Li (Li Fei) is Program Manager of Student Programs Support and Development for the Harvard China Fund. She works at the Harvard Center Shanghai and assists the Director of Programs and Administration in managing the China-based portion of the Harvard China Student Internship Program and the Harvard China Winter Service Program. She also provides support for other Harvard related programs in China and helps expand and maintain Harvard’s relationship with Chinese authorities, universities and other institutions.
Before joining the Harvard China Fund in 2009, Anna Li worked in Corporate Relations at the School of Management of Fudan University. She obtained her Master’s degree in Education from East China Normal University in 2006, and a Bachelor’s dual degree in Public Management and Business Management from Zhejiang University in 2003.
