The Fairbank Center Collection

In Fall 2005 the Fairbank Center Library became part of the H.C. Fung Library which is located in the Knafel Building, Concourse Level, 1737 Cambridge St. The Fung Library brings together the libraries of the former Coolidge Hall, including the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies Library, the Documentation Center on Contemporary Japan, and the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies Library, under the aegis of the Social Sciences Program of the Harvard College Library. Holdings focus on international politics, foreign relations, foreign policy, economics, sociology, and political science of the respective areas and regions.

The Fairbank Center has had its own library for more than twenty-five years. The Fairbank Center Collection, under the direction of Nancy Hearst, specializes in hard-to-find Chinese-language publications, including statistical sources and unpublished documents, and in this way complements other Harvard collections in the field of China studies. The library now holds approximately 30,000 volumes, about half of which are in Chinese. The library also subscribes to 150 periodicals and newspapers in Chinese and English.

The unique materials of the Collection are an invaluable resource to the international community of China scholars, especially those working on political and economic issues of contemporary China. This facility is of significant use to faculty affiliates, visiting scholars, and students, and draws many researchers from throughout the United States and abroad.

Location and hours

The Fairbank Center Collection is currently located in the H.C. Fung Library in the Knafel Building at 1737 Cambridge Street on the concourse level. The collection is non-circulating.

Collection hours are M-Th 10-9, F 10-5, Sat and Sun 12-5.
