2007 - 2008 Season
November 18th, 7:30pm - Paine Hall Erich Wolfgang Korngold and Jean Sibelius died two months apart, in the fall of 1957. Fifty years later, the Dudley Orchestra will celebrate both composers. We'll play excerpts from one of Korngold's groundbreaking film scores, as well as a stunningly gorgeous aria from the opera that cemented his reputation as Europe's greatest wunderkind since Mozart. The Seventh Symphony, written in a single, continuous movement, was one of Sibelius's final works, and is arguably his masterpiece. Rounding out the program will be November Woods, an eerie tone poem by the underrated English composer Arnold Bax, a contemporary of Korngold and Sibelius.
Tickets $7 (general public), $5 (students, seniors, Harvard ID holders)
The Orchestra plays a selection of waltzes for Dudley House's annual Winter Waltz. Tickets will be available in December at the Dudley House Office.
Last year's evening of chamber music was so popular, we're doing it again. Grab a cup of coffee and a cookie and listen to chamber music performed by members of the Orchestra. The evening will close with a performance of Schubert's Symphony No. 3, a concise, sparkling work of classical proportions.
Free admission - no tickets required. Coffee and refreshments will be available.
April 19th, 12:30pm - Dudley House Dining Hall World-renowned cellist Alan Stepansky (Harvard class of '82) will give a public masterclass, featuring student musicians from several Harvard schools. Join us for a rare behind-the-scenes look at the artistic process -- it should be a unique experience for musicians and non-musicians alike!
The Orchestra welcomes Alan Stepansky, Harvard alum and former associate principal cellist of the New York Philharmonic, for a performance of Saint-Saëns' popular Cello Concerto No. 1. Also on the program will be Dvoràk's final symphonic work, A Hero's Song; and the rousing First Symphony of Vasily Kalinnikov, a favorite of Tchaikovsky's and Rachmaninoff's.
Tickets $12 (general public), $9 (students, seniors, Harvard ID holders)
