The General Examination
Concentrators in the Classics are expected to have read the entire Undergraduate Reading List (or the portions of it that are appropriate to their concentration options) before taking the General Examination. The Reading List has been designed both to familiarize concentrators with a core of canonical texts and to develop fluency in reading a broad range of authors in different styles and genres. Wide reading in the original languages, both from the list and beyond it, is the best preparation for the Ancient Languages portion of the General Examination, as well as providing a first approach to the Greek and Latin literature fields of the Ancient World portion. Within the DepartmentÍs curriculum, the 112 survey courses dealing with the History of Greek and Latin Literature, while not required, provide one opportunity for juniors and seniors to work through the Reading List within a historical and interpretive framework. More specialized perspectives can be pursued by taking various Latin and Greek 100-level courses. Beyond the curriculum, concentrators are also urged to read whole literary works in English translation and to build up a picture of the items on the Reading List within their broader cultural contexts. Faculty members in the Department are happy to advise on the bibliographic resources available for various topics; concentrators are urged in particular to consult the numerous school editions and commentaries that have been purchased for Smyth Library for assistance with the Reading List.
Note: The terms "Ancient Languages" and "Ancient World" apply to concentrators graduating in 2007 and later.
Note: Concentrators in Classical Archaeology, Greek and Roman History, and Medieval Latin have specific reading lists (see the links referenced at the top of this page).
