A Workshop of
The Atlantic History Seminar

in collaboration with
The Centre for History and Economics
University of Cambridge

Copley portrait of Judge Martin Howard, Jr., 1767

This Workshop will concentrate on the roles of law in Atlantic history—as the formal, constituted linkage between European metropoles and colonial dependencies, as an area of conflict between the legalities of conquerors and the customs and norms of indigenous peoples, as the process of adapting the regulative systems of certain localities to the conditions of others, and as the source of confusion resulting from the conflicts of laws in the Atlantic world.

The morning session will consist of presentations by authorities on several legal systems. The afternoon session will consist of a panel of younger historians who will discuss current innovations in the study of the subject. In both sessions there will be emphasis on the sources available for future research in the legalities of Atlantic history.

Lunch will be provided, and a reception will follow the afternoon session.

Attendance at the Workshop and participation in the discussion are open to the academic community. Historians at the beginning of their career are especially encouraged to attend. Travel and accommodation expenses will be the responsibility of attendees, though the Workshop can provide local lodging information. Please see our lodging list. Pre-registration is required.

A registration form and the preliminary program are available online. If you are unable to print the form, or if you have any questions, please contact Pat Denault, Atlantic History Seminar, Emerson Hall 4th Floor, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA 02138; fax: 617-496-8869. A program will be posted as soon as it becomes available.
