Events and seminars

Undergraduate Grants

Included here are grants and fellowships available to students of Asian Studies and students wishing to pursue research or language study in Asia. For many of the funds listed, you must complete and submit a common application available at https://asperin.fas.harvard.edu/carat/. The deadline for the common application is Tuesday, February 26, 2008, at 12:00 PM. Funds available through the common application are marked with an *. Please follow the CARAT instructions carefully as they include all requirements and supplemental materials and submission instructions. Please contact Jorge Espada at jespada@fas.harvard.edu if you have any questions regarding the application. Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $3,000, except as noted.

For grants not using the CARAT application, please inquire directly at each individual center for full application guidelines.

Please note that all undergraduate grants are subject to Harvard's policy precluding undergraduate travel to countries under a Department of State travel warning.

Undergraduate Grants and Fellowships

Language

* Asia Center Undergraduate Summer Language Grants
These grants are open to undergraduates who plan to enroll in a summer language program in the United States or abroad. Eligible languages include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese, though all East Asian languages will be considered. The grant will provide funding towards tuition, travel, and living expenses. Preference will be given those students whose concentrations either require or give credit for language study, or who plan a senior thesis project that makes use of the language to be studied. Recipients are required to submit upon their return, a copy of the certificate received upon completion of the program and a brief report on their experience. Application available here.

* Fung Foundation Scholarships for Summer Research, Study, and Work in China (with the Office of International Programs)
These grants for undergraduates of up to $5,000 ($6,000 for language) may be used for senior thesis research, language study, internships, and public service work in China over the summer. Recipients become Fung Scholars and are expected to participate in related events. Recipients are required to submit a brief report on their work over the summer. Application available here.

* Reischauer Institute Undergraduate Summer Japanese Language Grants
Awarded to Harvard undergraduates in any concentration who plan to enroll in a summer Japanese language study program in Japan . Preference will be given to those students whose concentrations either require or give credit for language study, or who plan a senior thesis project that makes use of the language to be studied. Applications must include a budget and should explain the student's degree of preparation for studying Japanese in Japan and how such an opportunity will fit into the student's overall course of study at Harvard. Applications must be supported by two letters of recommendation, one from a language instructor (if appropriate). (Grants up to $6,000.)

Research

* Asia Center Undergraduate Summer Research Grants
These grants support undergraduate research during the summer in or relating to any country in East, South, and Southeast Asia . Preference will be given to students whose research is directly related to a senior honors thesis. Grants will not exceed $3,000. Recipients are required to submit a brief report on their work over the summer. Application available here.

Dean’s Summer Research Awards (Student Employment Office)
Rising seniors on financial aid who have obtained funding for their summer research (through HCRP or any other source) are encouraged to apply for the DSR. This award helps to cover a portion of the researcher’s financial aid summer savings requirement. The HCRP Committee reviews applications to the program at four times during the academic year. These grants support undergraduate research during the summer in China or Taiwan. Preference will be given to students whose research is directly related to a senior honors thesis. * Harvard College Research Program (Student Employment Office)
The Harvard College Research Program supports student-initiated scholarly research and creative endeavors undertaken with faculty guidance. All undergraduates may apply for HCRP funding, regardless of financial need. Seniors are not eligible for summer funding after they’ve graduated, and students on leave are not ordinarily eligible for term-time funding. The HCRP encourages scholarly exploration in the freshman and sophomore years along with the more focused endeavors of juniors and seniors. Preference will be given to students with a demonstrated background or a proven interest in the subject area. This may include previous study or lab work, work experience or extra-curricular activities, or a bibliography developed with faculty guidance. Term time awards fall generally between $500 and $1000 a term, and summer awards are generally between $1000 and $2500. Please apply for other sources of funding if your plans require more than our standard award. Due dates for 2007-2008 HCRP and DSR applications are as follows: Fall: Wednesday, October 10, 2007; Spring: Wednesday, February 6, 2008; Summer: Wednesday, April 2, 2008. * Young-Chul Min Memorial Summer Travel Fellowships (Korea Institute)
Available to Harvard undergraduates in the humanities or social sciences for research or field work in Korea directly related to a senior honors thesis. Applicants must have at least two years of Korean language study or otherwise demonstrate language proficiency. Fellows will be required to present their research at a workshop in the fall.

* Reischauer Institute Undergraduate Summer Travel Research Grants and the Henry Rosovsky Undergraduate Summer Travel Research Grant
Awarded to Harvard undergraduates in the humanities or social sciences to use in Japan for research and/or field work relating directly to a senior honors thesis in an area of Japanese studies. (Grants up to $4,000.)

Internships and Volunteer Work

Korea Institute Undergraduate Internships
The Korea Institute offers a limited number of paid summer internships to Korea , such as the National Assembly and the Chosun Ilbo, Seoul , Korea. The internships include a stipend and airfare. Preference may be given to students with strong Korean language skills. Harvard College Japan Summer Internship Program (Reischauer Institute)
For Harvard undergraduates in any concentration to undertake a summer internship in Japan . Applicants are encouraged to arrange their own internship directly with a host organization in Japan . Those students who do not arrange their own internship must specify the type of internship they seek in as much detail as possible. The Reischauer Institute cannot guarantee placement. Preference will be given to students enrolled in Japanese language courses. (Grants up to $5,000). For application materials, contact Theodore Gilman (tgilman@fas.harvard.edu). Application deadline is late-December to the Reischauer Institute, CGIS South Second Level, 1730 Cambridge Street.

Weissman International Internship Program (Office of Career Services)
The Weissman International Internship Program was established by Paul (’52) and Harriet Weissman to help foster the development of Harvard College students’ understanding of the global community in which they will live and work. The program, administered through the International Experience Program (IEP) of the Office of Career Services, provides financial support for overseas internships arranged and proposed to the selection committee by sophomores and juniors of Harvard College. Applications are due at the Office of Career Services on Tuesday, February 5, 2008, in the OCS Conference Room. Early submissions are welcome. Student Organization Grants

Asia Center Student Organization Grants
Funding is available for student organizations (both undergraduate and graduate) to support activities related to Asian studies. Activities may include, but are not limited to, publications, cultural programs, conferences, workshops, and speakers. The amount allocated for food and beverages at an event is limited to $125. Applications should be submitted to Holly Angell at vhangell@fas.harvard.edu or to CGIS South Building , Room S113A, 1730 Cambridge Street , Cambridge , MA 02138 . The deadline for the fall term is Monday, October 22, 2007, and for the spring term, Monday, February 25, 2008. If you are unable to meet these deadlines, we cannot guarantee that funds will be available.

Fairbank Center Student Organization Grants
The Fairbank Center invites both undergraduate and graduate student groups to apply for funding for academic, China-related events, programs, publications or workshops. Please submit a proposal with a detailed budget to fairbank@fas.harvard.edu at least six weeks in advance of the event or project. These are small grants intended to supplement other funding. Preference is given to programs that will be held on campus. Speaker events must be open to the public.

Korea Institute Student Organization Grants
Grants are available by application to the Korea Institute on a case-by-case basis. Undergraduate student organizations are given priority.

Reischauer Institute Student Organization Grants
Awarded to Harvard student groups to support activities relating to Japanese studies. Please submit proposals with a detailed budget to Theodore Gilman (tgilman@fas.harvard.edu).

Study Abroad

Chinese Government Scholarships (Harvard Committee on General Scholarships)
Up to five full scholarships (including tuition, campus housing, health insurance, and a stipend) and ten partial scholarships (including tuition only) are offered for study or research at approximately 80 Chinese universities authorized to admit foreign scholarship students. Admission to the selected university for scholarship winners is arranged by the Chinese Ministry of Education. The scholarships are available for Harvard undergraduate and graduate students. Applicants must be citizens of the United States. Applications will be available in September from the Committee on General Scholarships. The application deadline for the 2008-2009 academic year is December 7, 2007. For more information, please contact Rebecca Bauer at 617-496-5042 or rbauer@fas.harvard.edu. This program is made possible through an arrangement between Harvard University and the China Scholarship Council at the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Freeman-ASIA Award Program (Office of International Programs)
Please visit www.iie.org/programs/freeman-asia/ for more information. Harvard College applicants must be endorsed for the Freeman by the college through the Office of International Programs, therefore, students must submit their applications to OIP by the college deadline, which is listed on the funding sources Database for International Experience (www.funding.fas.harvard.edu).

Harvard-Yenching Institute Student Exchange Fellowships
Harvard-Yenching Institute offers highly competitive fellowships for study abroad in China, Japan and Korea. The program is open to juniors wishing to spend a year abroad before entering their senior year and graduating seniors (although preference will be given to undergraduates.) Students will be placed according to their language ability and, if appropriate, they may attend other university courses in the local language. The partner universities are: Ewha University , Tokyo University , Fudan University, Nanjing University , Peking University, and Tsinghua University . The fellowships provide tuition, board and a small stipend. In addition, the Harvard-Yenching Institute provides a $2000 fellowship to cover roundtrip airfare and incidentals. Complete applications are due by February 15, 2008 with final selection notification made by March 7, 2008. OIP Scholarships for Harvard Summer Study Abroad
The Office of International Programs, in conjunction with the Harvard Summer School and the Financial Aid Office, offers partial scholarships to support language study in Asia and enrollment in Harvard Summer School study abroad programs. Harvard College undergraduates in good standing are eligible to apply. Grant applications will be reviewed by the Office of International Programs and rated on the level of need and/or the relevance of the Harvard Summer School study abroad program to the student’s academic goals. Please note that this does not mean that a student’s concentration must relate directly to a program—for instance, one may be a scientist with a proven academic interest in a language or region. Freshmen who have not yet had a significant international experience are particularly encouraged to apply. Other

Noma-Reischauer Prizes in Japanese Studies (for 2008)
Awarded to Harvard students who write essays on Japan-related topics. One ($2,000) undergraduate and one ($3,000) graduate prize are awarded annually. Submission deadline is Monday, June 30, 2008, 5:00 pm to the Reischauer Institut, CGIS South Second Level, 1730 Cambridge Street .

Japan-America Student Conference (JASC) Fee Awards (www.jasc.org)
Awarded to Harvard students who are selected by the JASC committee to participate in the Japan-America Student Conference in the summer of 2008. (Grants up to $3,000). Application deadline is February 8, 2008. Students should apply directly to JASC.
