RE: New Graduate Consortium on Energy and Environment


I am delighted to announce the launch of the Graduate Consortium on Energy and Environment, a new interdisciplinary training opportunity for doctoral students interested in energy issues. The Consortium will foster a new community of students who will be well versed in the broad, interconnected issues of energy and environment while maintaining their focus in their primary discipline.

Starting in the Spring 2009 semester, the Consortium will admit its first cohort of students, who will enroll in a suite of new courses that constitute the program requirements. Mike Aziz of SEAS will offer a course on energy technology and energy systems; Bill Hogan and Erich Muehlegger of the Kennedy School will co-teach a course on energy policy; and in Fall 2009 I will offer a course on energy consequences. Students will also be required to participate in a weekly reading seminar that will provide an overview of the energy field from a wide range of perspectives, and will be led by faculty members from around the university. We hope your department will consider whether one or more of these new courses might satisfy elective requirements for students in your program. Students enrolled in the Consortium will be expected to fulfill all the requirements for the Ph.D. in their home department or program and must have the approval of their advisers to apply.

Students accepted into the Consortium will be eligible to apply for graduate fellowships provided by the Center for the Environment, which will coordinate with the GSAS on fellowship decisions. Consortium students will also be eligible to receive up to $1,000 to attend conferences or other professional activities during their time in the program.

The attached brochure offers more information on the Consortium and details on how to apply. The deadline for applications is October 31st with a second application cycle in May 2009.
