Course Equivalencies

Applicable to students who matriculate at Harvard in September 2007.

Eligible students who apply for Advanced Standing should note that credit for an AP test in most fields is recorded in the Registrar's Office in terms of the equivalent course offered at Harvard. Those students who apply for Advanced Standing and who have scores of 5 on more than 4.0 AP tests will be asked to choose which 4.0 they wish to use towards their Advanced Standing eligibility. Students who are granted Advanced Standing may not therefore take for credit any course for which they have received equivalent college credit as a result of a score on an AP examination.

This is true only of students who are granted Advanced Standing. Those who are not eligible for or do not apply for Advanced Standing may take equivalent courses, though the College recommends that students enroll in the most advanced courses for which they are prepared.

Course equivalencies are listed below. The citation "no equivalent course" indicates that although the respective department may recognize Advanced Placement credit as the equivalent of a full or half-year's college-level work in its subject, no comparable course is at present offered at Harvard.

This list includes only those AP and Harvard Placement examinations that may be used to earn credit for Advanced Standing. Individual departments may, however, give departmental credit for other AP examinations. Interested students should consult the relevant departments.
